![]() The third game is like the first except it has free-roam in it, allowing you to farm pirates for money, to explore certain systems for hidden caches of loot, earn experience for your pilots etc. In the first game the campaign progresses via missions, you have your mothership, Star Wolf, which is your home and can provide fire support and in-mission repairs/resupply, losing it is game over, complete the missions and collect salvage/bounties to get better ships and equipment, sometimes you can collect superior (or unique) equipment or ships if you choose the right path and use the right dialogue choices. Star Wolves 1 and Star Wolves 3 - Both games fully 3D like the Homeworld series, would not recommend the 2nd game, I found this series pretty tough even on easy. they're released SPAZ2 but I don't know much about it. Space Pirates and Zombies - Top-down game, combat somewhat similar to Starsector, objective is to get to the centre of the galaxy and acquire better tech and ship blueprints along the way, later on you can have around 4 ships or so in your fleet with you controlling a flagship, you can fly alone in one decked-out ship with the best tech with no AI wingmen and sometimes that's the best thing to do to conserve resources. not 100% sure if the developer is still 'all-there' so be careful if you consider getting this.Įndless Sky and Naev - Two free remakes/spiritual successors to EV:Nova, Endless Sky is more complete of the two iirc and has one major storyline completed plus the ability to store ships for different purposes, I don't know much about Naev so I can't say much about it, unfortunately. Rebel Galaxy - Space naval combat, a bit-arcade like but fun for a while, the most powerful weapons on your flagship are broadside cannons, standard game where you endeavour to improve your ships power or buy better larger ships, you can ram ships to death if that's your thing.Įscape Velocity: Nova - Top-down space shooter game where you do the standard things to earn money, trading, missions, combat, piracy and so on, lots of ships and outfits available but sadly no way to store excess ships so getting one super ship with the best tech is a constant objective, heavily story based and depending on what you do, where you go, how much combat you see, you'll get the choice to join one of the major factions in a very lengthy (and fun) storyline, I believe there was at least 7 major storylines so a lot of replay value along with a lot of minor ones. There are a bunch of other fun abstractions and game systems, like combat readiness of your ships, and so on, and I think it is one of the stronger point of the game, it's game systems very rarely feel "gamey" unlike many space 4x-es where the devs throw up their hands and just say "okay, here is a hard limit to fleet size, because our terrible game mechanics constantly lead to death balling."īased on what you've asked for I doubt I'll be able to suggest any 4Xs but I figure you might enjoy some of them nonetheless, I won't list things that were already here such as FTL, Avorian or Starsector, all three are great games for what it's worth, imo. Second, you have two defences, a shield, and armor all over your ship, now, armor is locational, meaning that if all the armor gets blown off your right side, you can turn your left side against the enemy, and use up that armor as well (and the AI is capable of using this) You only take damage, from hits on exposed hull, without armor. First, every weapon and the engines have their own "health" can get disabled in battle (both from normal weapon fire, and from specialized ion damage) but they are only temporarily disabled (your crew works on restoring them mid battle, with a lot of things factoring in to how fast that is) No, it is in fact way more complicated than that.
